Team Meeting, Art Meeting, Concept Art
This week I attended two different meetings discussing the overall design of the game and specific assignments each person should have for this week. Prior to the meeting, I researched about how other combat flying games integrated narrative into their stories and read commentary about character designs in fighting games. I also came up with some ideas about how we could integrate narrative based on my research and some vague character descriptions to start with. Both meetings were productive and the original team welcomed our, the new members, design ideas and critiques. I spent the majority of my time working on the mock up portion of this week's deliverable, specifically character concepts.
Hours Spent: 10.5 Hours
- Team Meeting: 1.5 hours
- Art Meeting: 2 hours
- Research: 1 hour
- Concept Art: 6 hours
Visual Sample:
I actually really enjoyed the research I did for prior to the team meeting. I think it was very helpful overall and was able to inspire the team. I gave it a lot of thought and tried to find relevant games to find examples and learn from. It taught me a lot about character design and narrative in a genre of games that I am not familiar with and never experienced at Drexel until now.
What Went Wrong:
I don't think really anything went necessarily "wrong" this week. The team had pretty good communication and the meetings were very productive. I want to fix the character design a bit and tweak the outfits. I think the main player's design, the red suited character, resembles a Power Ranger too closely and the stance came out more awkward than I initially planned for it to be. I might also mute the colors for the Leader, the woman with black hair, because she seems overtly futuristic than the other characters.
Plans for Next Week:
I plan on working more on these designs and consulting a friend of mine who is a fashion design major about the character's outfits. I did research online for sci-fi related attire but I wanted each outfit to match the character's personality and also lend to the post-apocalyptic narrative. I also have been testing out the sculpting feature in Blender perhaps being able to help with rendering the characters in 3D eventually if that is our plan.
